Ralf Hinrichs, Nichts Halbes Nichts Ganzes — 2024

Located in an economically disadvantaged region of eastern Germany, the project addresses the revitalization of a ruined castle and its protection from further decay. Since the departure of the school that occupied the building as an interim use during the GDR era, the village centre has gradually lost its social and spatial significance. Today, a local association uses the castle intermittently as an event venue while coordinating its ongoing restoration. Adjacent to the site lies the Leinawald, one of the few protected nature reserves within a landscape otherwise dominated by large-scale industrial agriculture.

Rather than reconstructing the former moated castle, the project Nothing Half, Nothing Whole proposes a gradual transformation of the site into a vibrant, productive, and cultural landscape at the heart of the village. The forest is ecologically connected to the retention basin and the Leuba stream through the village centre, establishing a continuous biotope. Targeted architectural interventions and selective demolition increase the porosity and accessibility of the village core. An additional loop of the regional cycling route introduces day visitors into the village, strengthening local activity while increasing the visibility of the castle's cultural programme.
A vacant supermarket (4) adjacent to the site serves as the first catalyst for the village's transformation. An inserted workshop supports the ongoing restoration of the castle and establishes an initial productive hub. In the long term, the courtyard of the ruin is transformed into an open restoration workshop (1) operated by the Jugendbauhütte (Youth Heritage Workshop), before evolving into a sheltered venue for changing cultural events.

The vacant administrative building of the former manor estate (2) is adaptively reused as a hostel, providing accommodation for volunteers and visitors. Materials recovered from selectively dismantled structures are carefully reassembled into a continuous wall that defines a new neighbourhood centre (3) incorporating a traditional bowling alley. This assemblage-like structure preserves traces of the demolished buildings, making the material history of the village square legible while providing a robust architectural backdrop for new forms of collective life.
